SEMESTER IN CHINA

An intensive 18-week semester in China designed to build your confidence in speaking Mandarin. Learn with top-tier teachers in small group classes averaging just 3 students. Experience full immersion with Chinese culture.

Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Beihai and Xi’an, five completely different perspectives of China, all offering LTL’s same intensive Mandarin program with small group classes and native-speaking teachers.

Outside the classroom, studying Chinese in China means the language is everywhere, from ordering dumplings at a street stall to navigating the high-speed rail network, and every one of those moments is doing as much work as the lessons themselves.

FAQs for Semester in China

I know zero Chinese, can I still join this semester program?

Yes, most of our Semester program students are also beginners.

We will find a class that fits your level. If you’d like to learn some survival basics before you arrive in China, then our online Flexi Classes might be just the thing for you.

I’m over 30, can I still partake?

Of course you can!

Our semester program welcomes students of all ages and backgrounds.

Whilst semesters are normally associated with university students, at LTL all ages are welcome.

When are my classes?

All of our classes take place Monday to Friday for four hours per day, typically in the mornings.

During busy periods, group classes may also run in the afternoon.

The set class times cannot be changed; however, we are happy to help you switch to a different group class if there is space available.

Which city should I choose for my semester in China?

We run semester programs across Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Beihai and Xi’an, plus also Taipei and each city offers a genuinely different experience.

Beijing is the political and cultural heart of China, ideal if you want exposure to standard Mandarin and a city full of history.

Shanghai is China’s most international city, faster-paced and more cosmopolitan. Chengdu is relaxed, affordable and packed with culture, and the locals speak with a distinctive accent that will sharpen your listening skills fast.

Beihai is perfect if you want a quieter, coastal setting with a lower cost of living.

Xi’an suits students who want deep historical immersion alongside their studies.

If you genuinely cannot decide, Beijing is the most popular choice for first-time students in China.

Is there much for me to do outside of class?

There certainly is.

We are fully prepared every week.

Our staff produce a list of weekly social activities which students can partake in at their own free will. These range from visits to our favourite restaurants and bars, to trips to museums, art districts and much more.

How many people will be in my class?

This will change according to what time of year you come and how busy the school is, but the class size is between 3 and 10 students depending on the destination you choose.

Can I also stay at an LTL homestay?

If you book a semester program in China with us, then yes!

We strictly reserve homestays for LTL students and we have many up and down the country.

We’ll be sure to find the perfect match for you.

Can I study for multiple semesters?

Yes you can.

Our semester program runs for 18 weeks but if you wish you can also study for 36 weeks and double up.

Why will I progress quicker at LTL compared to university?

It is genuinely true by the way; you will progress faster here!

Small class sizes are crucial to this. Imagine being in a class of 15 or 30, you can’t speak up. Your teacher cannot correct you.

There is no personal focus. With us there is. You will form a close bond with your teacher(s) and they will get to know your strengths and weaknesses. Don’t underestimate those extra 5/10 minutes per class as well.

55 minutes compared to 45 minutes make a huge difference over a Semester.

We compared language school vs university studying here.

What Mandarin level will I reach after a semester in China?

Most students join LTL as complete beginners and finish their semester at HSK 2 or HSK 3, giving them a genuine foundation in conversational Mandarin.

Students who arrive with some existing Chinese typically push through to HSK 4 or higher.

Progress depends on how much you immerse yourself outside the classroom, and living in China full-time is by far the biggest accelerator.

Our curriculum is built around the HSK framework, so your progress is structured and measurable throughout.

Happy Birthday to Our Students!
